Hybrid Eyes (2009)
A childhood in Kenya has left Esther Mugambi wondering what kind of childhood she might have had if she had stayed there. Inspired by East African VJs who translate foreign films into local languages in a highly subjective way, Mugambi mediates a visual trip between Nairobi and Amsterdam, adding her own commentary to splice reality and fiction.
Playing with the fickleness of memory, she creates a world that speaks sharply about a world that has come into focus recently thanks to Obama’s heritage and the violence following Kenya’s presidential election.
